She graduated from Tell City High School in 1951, where she was a member of the Marching Marksmen and got to perform at Soldier Field in Chicago.
Mary was united in marriage to Robert L. Rutherford on September 11, 1954 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City. Mary worked as a telephone operator at Camp Atterbury during the Korean War and, until 1965, in Phoenix Arizona where her two daughters were born. She retired in 1994 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Jasper.
She had been a Cub Scout leader and enjoyed reading, playing cards and spending time with her family. While raising her children and living in Cannelton, she was an active member of St. Ann Society and St. Michael Catholic Church where she was a eucharistic minister and assisted with funeral meals.
Surviving are her children, Jeff Rutherford, Sarasota, Florida, Ann Sullivan (Ray), Sarasota, Florida and Susan Smith (Kerry), Corydon; grandchildren, Derek Smith (Sarah), Dustin Smith, Michelle Smith, Eddie Sullivan (Nicole Kaplan) and Kevin Sullivan (Casey) and great grandchildren, Aiden, Owen, Emersyn, Harper and Lainey.
Preceding her in death, besides her parents, were her husband, Robert L. "Bob" Rutherford; a son, Robert Joseph Rutherford and a sister, Helen Franks.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 5, 2021, at St. Michael Catholic Church with burial in St. Michael Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 until 7:00 PM on Thursday and from 8:30 until 9:30 AM on Friday at Huber Funeral Home, Cannelton Chapel.
