Robert Stephen Boyd
Reno - It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Boyd announces his death on May 6, 2021, at home in Reno, Nevada.
Robert was born on September 16, 1924, to Grover and Frances Boyd in Donora, Pennsylvania about 50 miles from Pittsburgh. When he was a young child, the family moved to the New York City area. Later, the family purchased a farm they called Robin Hill near Chautauqua, New York. Robert and his family spent many happy summers attending seminars, speeches and musical events at the Chautauqua Institution.
After finishing high school in New York, Robert enlisted in the Army Air Corp. During World War II, he was stationed in the U.K. with the 447th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He completed 35 missions as a ball turret gunner on a Flying Fortress B-17 fighting the Nazis in the air war over Europe. For his service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters.
Taking advantage of the GI Bill, after the war Robert attended Bethany College in Ohio where he met and married Carol Joan (Boyd) Boyd. Their union produced four children: Robin, Pamela, Ann and Robert Stephen Jr.
In 1986, while living in Des Moines, Robert met Carolyn Prusa. In 1989, the couple moved to Reno where they were wed. Their love affair and marriage lasted over 35 years until his passing.
Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, parents and three sisters, as well as Carolyn's parents and one daughter. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Prusa; his four children, their spouses, eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as Carolyn's three surviving children, six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild, plus many extended family members.
