Opera Singer. Gayarre was considered one of the leading tenors of his time. Born in El Roncal, Navarra, Gayarre worked as a blacksmith, when he decided to study at the Madrid Conservatory. Gayarre then moved to Milan, where shortly after his arrival, he made his debut as Nemorino in "L'Elisir d'Amore" and his success was immediate. Gayarre created the title role in "Duca d'Alba" and Enzo in "La Gioconda." He played in the major opera houses in Europe and South America in the peak of his career from 1873 to 1886. His many performances include "La Favorita," Glinka's "A Life for the Tsar," Gounod's "Faust" and Verdi's "Rigoletto." His voice failed him during a Madrid performance of Bizet's "Les Pêcheurs de Perles" in the last days of 1889. It was reported that he said, "Esto se acabó" ("It's all over"). He died shortly thereafter from a cancer of larynx. In 1901, his grave was marked with an marble and bronze mausoleum by the noted Spanish sculptor, Mariano Benlliure. Gayarre is also commemorated in Pamplona with a biennial competition for young singers. His life was adapted to the cinema in films such as "Gayarre" (1956) and "Romanza Final" (1989), where his role was played by the tenors Alfredo Kraus and José Carreras.
