William Erwin was educated at local schools and then attended the Medical School in nearby Augusta, Georgia. He returned to the area he grew up and started his medical practice.
On the 4th of February 1829, Dr. Erwin married Miss Julia Caroline Robert, daughter of William Henry Robert and the former Mary Ann Maner, of Robertsville in Jasper County. They would make their home at Erwinton, their 430 acre cotton plantation. Here they raised their known children:
James Daniel (1829-1909)
Sarah Elizabeth {Wade}(1832-1879)
Ann Marion (1834-1834)
Ephriam A. S. (1838-1863)
Rebecca (1840-1840)
Julia Adelaide {Howell}(1842-1906)
Ida Leila {Woodward}(1852-1921)
Dr. Erwin, his wife Julia Caroline and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Rachael Robert, were excommunicated in 1833 from Kirkland Church, a Baptist Missionary Church, due to their affiliations with other denominations. The three entered into a covenant declaring their beliefs, and founding the second Christian congregation [Disciples of Christ) in South Carolina. They held weekly services at Erwinton until 1835, when the present meeting house was completed and dedicated as Antioch Christian Church.
Dr. William Robinson Erwin departed this life on November 17th 1856. He was laid to rest in the churchyard cemetery at Antioch Christian Church.
