Gordon Covalt Miller, MD
9/15/1929 - 10/20/2021

Gordon Covalt Miller, MD, of Eugene, OR, died on October 20, 2021, at the dawn of the new day, in the presence of his family. He was born on September 15, 1929 in Cincinnati, OH, to parents, Verna and Gordon Miller, Sr.

A life-long learner, Gordon's formal education included a Bachelor of Science degree, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Gordon served as a flight surgeon while stationed at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, WA, and began his long and rewarding professional career in Prosser, WA as a Family Practice physician, and ended as a Radiologist at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, OR. He served in multiple leadership positions throughout his career, including Practice President, Radiology Director, and Chief of Staff at both Prosser Memorial and Sacred Heart Hospitals.

Gordon had an unmatched passion for life, which was evident in his many interests including bird hunting, fly fishing, skiing, hiking, camping, tennis, golf, wine tasting, cycling, digital photography, sports (especially Oregon football) computer technology, playing guitar and nature in all forms.

There was nothing Gordon enjoyed more than spending time with his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Ann Arnold, in 1947, a union that lasted 64 years. Together, Gordon and Joyce had three children, Marilyn, Clay and Lori. During the last 9 years, Gordon was blessed by the company of his partner Su Parshall, and her children, Bruce, Jeff, Dale and Jill. In addition to his human family, Gordon had many canine companions, including English Setters, Doberman Pinschers, and later in life, his beloved Shelties.

Following the end of his medical career in 1990, Gordon found he had, in his words, an 'untapped and rewarding talent' for retirement. Gordon and Joyce spent many years as snowbirds in Tucson, AZ where Gordon taught computer classes, led mountain bike rides, and facilitated a current affairs meetup. They both enjoyed the warm dry weather, desert landscape, and many new found friends.

Gordon will be remembered by all who knew him for his incredible sense of humor, eloquent conversance, generosity, and kindness. He is survived by his partner, Su Parshall, his children and their spouses, Marilyn (Bert), Clay (Leah), and Lori (Kay), and six grandchildren and their families. Living to the age of 92, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Miller, and many dear friends and colleagues.

A family celebration of life was held on October 25th. Please consider a donation to Sacred Heart Hospice, who provided knowledgeable and compassionate end-of-life care to Gordon and his family.
