Jeanette Anne McGee-Wakefield-Reed-Murillo (1940–2012)
BIRTH 25 DEC 1940 • San Francisco, San Francisco, California, USA
DEATH 12 NOV 2012 • Vallejo, California, USA

1940's SAN FRANCISO: The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 and the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937. The 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition was held on Treasure Island. At the same time the island of Alcatraz, a former military stockade, began its service as a federal maximum-security prison, housing notorious inmates such as Al Capone, and Robert Franklin Stroud, The Birdman of Alcatraz.

1940 census data indicates Jeanette's parents and their four sons were living on possibly North Ave, near Santa Ynez Ave. in San Francisco within the same vicinity of where her mother grew up. Her dad's occupation is listed as building laborer, possibly construction. At the time the census data was collected, April 2, 1940, Anna 'Christina' was more than likely pregnant with her first daughter, Jeanette, who was born exactly 8 months, 23 days later.

McGee SIBLINGS:
1. David Calvin McGee Jr. (1932–2003)
2. George William McGee (1934–1995)
3. James Arthur McGee (1935–1985)
4. Robert Edward McGee (1937–2007)
5. Jeanette Anne McGee (1940–2012)
6. Timothy Fred McGee (1943–1954)
7. Pauline McGee-Baker (1946–)
8. Jackie 'Jack' McGee (1948–1992)

BIRTH: Jeanette Anne McGee was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1940, in San Francisco, California, her father, David Calvin McGee (1908–1970) was 32, and her mother, Anna 'Christina' Funk McGee (1912–1990) was 28.

WORLD WAR II: During World War II, San Francisco was the major mainland supply point and port of embarkation for the war in the Pacific. It also saw the largest and oldest enclave of Japanese outside of Japan, Japantown, completely remove all of its ethnic Japanese residents as a result of Executive Order 9066 that forced all Japanese of birth or descent in the United States to be interned. By 1943 many large sections of the neighborhood remained vacant due to the forced internment.

The void was quickly filled by thousands of African Americans who had left the South to find wartime industrial jobs in California as part of the Great Migration. Many African Americans also settled in the Fillmore District and most notably near the Bayview-Hunters Point shipyards, working in the dry-docks there. The same docks at Hunters Point would be used for loading the key fissile components of the first atomic bomb onto the USS Indianapolis in July 1945 for transfer to Tinian.

Her future husband, Orin, also grew up in the Bay Area and lived four and a half miles from her.

MARRIAGE: Orin Leroy Wakefield Jr (1938–1981) age 17, 4 months and 8 days old married, Jeanette Anne McGee, age14 years, 10 months, 3 days old on October 28, 1955, in San Mateo, California. Their first child, Jesse, was born 9-months and 1-week after their wedding.

DEATH: Jeanette Anne "Jeannie" McGee Wakefield-Reed-Murillo died November 12, 2012 at home in Vallejo, California. She was cremated and her daughter Doreen, her caretaker, has her cremains. She was 71.

SUMMARY: Jeanette Anne McGee was one of eight siblings growing up in the post-depression San Francisco Bay Area of California. Before she was 14, her two oldest brothers had married, her sister and 2 brothers were born, one of whom would die a month after her 13th birthday.

She met and fell in love with a boy from the neighborhood and at the age of age14 years and 10 months old, she married him. Her first child was born exactly 9-months later. Jeannie and Orin's marriage was not the storybook kind, there was poverty, spousal violence and at least one affair that produced another daughter for Orin. Jeannie went on to have five children with Orin and before her death, she would lose two of them. Jeannie never found her 'prince charming' marrying two more times, one lasting 6-months and the other a little over a year.

Before her death, Jeannie had made peace with her, since remarried, ex-husband Orin only to say good-bye again when he died at 42. She also lost two of her sons, Jesse and Alan, her mother 'Christina' and five of her brothers; James, Jack, George, David and Robert. "She was brave, and strong, and broken all at once."
