Joan M. Evans

Des Moines - Joan Marie Evans, 87, of Des Moines, Iowa traveled on to heaven to be with the Lord on October 24, 2021.

Born on January 19, 1934, in Des Moines to Robert and Alice Lee (Smith) Walker, she was the eldest of seven children and attended Valley High School in West Des Moines, Class of 1952.

On June 3, 1951, Joan was united in marriage to Paul T. Evans. They were blessed with a daughter, Kathy, and a son, Daniel. Paul and Joan were married 47 years, until Paul's death in 1998.

A proud member of the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, Weekookaga Ahnishenabag (she helps people) was the name given to Joan at her naming ceremony. She was dedicated to researching and documenting her family's tribal history and compiled her information into a book. She served on the Peoria Historical Committee for many years.

Time spent with family and making precious memories brought her the most joy. She delighted in rocking babies and gifting children of all ages with her time and wisdom. Joan also liked to travel, go camping, and loved attending the Iowa State Fair. Her interests included sewing, cake decorating, painting, making crafts and then sharing her creations with loved ones.

Those left to cherish her memory are daughter, Kathy (Clyde) Allred and son, Daniel (Shirley) Evans; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Beverly Jean Burson, Dorothy "Sissy" Kennedy, and Alice Joyce (Donald) Hill; brother, David (Barbara) Walker; sister-in-law, Sandra Walker; and many extended family members.

Joan is reunited with her husband, Paul Theodore; brothers, Robert Walker and Ronald (Karen) Walker; brother-in-law, Richard Burson; beloved granddaughter, Sarah Ann; and numerous family and friends. Praise the Lord! What a glorious homecoming.

A visitation will be held Sunday, October 31st from 2 to 4 p.m. at Iles Grandview Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, November 1 at the funeral home with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery immediately following.

A special thank you to Dr. Stanton Danielson, M.D. at UnityPoint and the staff at Valley View Village for the care and compassion shown to her.
