Mary Hill was born to parents, Floyd Wesley Treesh and Iona Faye Phillips Treesh and raised in Warsaw, Indiana. From an early age, she was a woman ahead of her time. She took shop class in high school, so her teacher would not allow her to be a member of the girls' clubs. So, it goes. Hard work was important to Mary. After graduation, she took a job at the local courthouse.
Her mother was part of a group that corresponded with soldiers during World War II. Mary began exchanging letters with a soldier named Austin Hill. In June 1943, Mary and her mother traveled to Missouri so she could marry her soldier, Austin. The honeymoon was spent on the train traveling to Austin's new base. Their marriage lasted 78 years.
Mary and Austin lived in California for a short time; however, Fort Wayne, Indiana, eventually became their home. Mary spent several years working for a farm management company there.
Upon their retirement, the couple wintered in Texas, Arizona, and Florida. Hemphill, Texas, became their permanent home in the early 2000s. During her time in Hemphill, Mary was involved in several community issues. She and Austin were particularly passionate about programs that helped children experience the outdoors.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Austin, her parents, a brother, and a sister. She is survived by two nieces and their families, several extended family members, and numerous friends.
Cremation arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.
