He served in WWII on the USS Fogg from 1941-1944 as a Gunners Mate Second Class. He was on the USS Fogg when it was torpedoed by a U-870 German submarine, commanded by Ernst Hechler. Fourteen men on teh Fogg were killed and two were wounded. The ship was badly damaged and ripped in half. Elmer survived the attack. He was honorably discharged on 16 June 1945.
He was married to his first wife, Lillian Carol (Roth) in Ohio on 11 February 1941. A WWII Bomber had to race him home for the birth of his son, Larry Allen Sayers (1942-1991). He made it just minutes before the birth. Six years later, a daughter was born - Rhea Cheryl Sayers Miller (1948-1965). Elmer and Lillian divorced on 16 June 1957.
On 4 February 1961, he married Nellie Roberta Blythe who had been previously married to Franklin James Deem. Elmer and Nellie divorced in September 1967.
On 9 May 1971, Elmer, known usually as Al, married Lena May Diamond Hessmer. Both he and Lena worked at Hughes Aircraft in California until their retirement.
He passed away from throat cancer with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by both of his children, Larry (murdered) and Rhea Cheryl (auto accident).
