Daniel Jones was born in Steuben, Oneida county, Nov. 15, 1836, being one of nine children who blessed the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Jones. When he was four years old his parents moved to Florence and located on a farm four miles west of that village on the State road. Fifty years ago next March he married Miss Thresa Balcom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Balcom of Redfield. Their wedded life was spent on the farm homestead until 16 years ago when on account of falling health he left the farm and moved into Redfield to live, last summer they bought a home in this village on Oswego St. and came here the 9th day of August.
Mr. Jones was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. C. 186th N. Y. Vols. For many years he has been a member of Post Gaylord of Redfield and had been honored by election to the office of Commander. He was also a member of the M. E. church In Redfield and had served the society faithfully and well in many ways. He has always been one of its great active members and it was an occasion of much regret to that community when he removed to this village.
Besides his wife he leaves a son and daughter — Eli D. Jones who occupies the farm homestead in Florence, and Mrs. E. E Paddock of Florence Hill. Of his father's family there survives a sister, Mrs. Maria Henry of Henry, Col.
The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock from his late home in this village, the Rev. J. L. Short, assisted by the Rev. H. W. Markham, to officiate. The remains will be taken to Redfield for interment and at the grave the Rev. Mr. Fulton will conduct the service.
