Major League Baseball Player. Born Charles Lemoine Thompson, he served with the United States Military during World War II. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, he made his Major League debut on April 20, 1954. In 1954, he secured the starting catcher position with the Kansas City Athletics and produced a career-high 73 hits with a .273 batting average. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport and served as a Minor League coach before going on to a lengthy career as a scout with the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles. It is widely believed that Thompson was the first catcher to wear glasses during a game.
