Dorothy Mae (Horne) Howard, 97, resident of Easton, Connecticut, from 1964 to 2013, passed peacefully at home, her loving family at her side, on Oct. 5, 2021. Best known as Dot, she was born on Oct. 25, 1923, on her parents' farm in Catawissa. She was the fifth of 11 children born to Robert E. and Bertha Mae Horne. Dot attended the former Locust Township High School in Numidia and received her RN from the nursing program at Bloomsburg Hospital in 1944. In February 1945, she married Lt. Winfield Hersey Howard, a navigation instructor for the U.S. Navy Air Force, stationed at Bloomsburg. Three days later she left to become a commissioned U.S. Army Nurse. She served in Hawaii and the Philippines until the end of World War II. The couple returned to Hersey's home in North Chelmsford, Mass. His career then led them to homes in Cincinnati; Lexington, Mass.; Providence and Greenville, R.I.; and eventually to Easton. During her life she was a devoted mother to four children, and was an RN in various hospitals. She retired after a 22-year career at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn. In retirement, she kept active as a member of Easton Congregational Church, UCC, and volunteering in her community. She spent her last 12 years in the loving care of her daughter, Donna Howard, in New Hartford, Conn. Dot was a prolific gardener, camper, hiker and traveler. During their 57-year marriage, she and Hersey drove twice across the U.S. and Canada, and took cruises to Alaska and Bermuda. She toured England, Scotland, Ireland and New Zealand. She delighted in knitting, rug braiding, reading, word puzzles, Scrabble, dominoes, and playing cards. She was inspired by poetry and heard Robert Frost read in Boston. Her favorite teams were the Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins. Dot is sorely missed by her son, William Howard (Donna) of Spokane; daughters: Ann Thresher (Wayne) of Ashhurst, New Zealand, and Donna (partner Martin Post); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Hersey; her 10 siblings, and eldest child, Virginia Jensen (Tom). Interment will be private in the family grave site in North Chelmsford. Donations in Dot's memory may be made to the National Audubon Society; Columbia County Historical and Genealogical Society; Easton Congregational Church, or North Congregational Church in New Hartford.
