Thomas L. “Tom” Butler, 98, a longtime resident of the Helvetia community, died Saturday afternoon, December 12, 2020 at the Jennings McCall II Assisted Living Center in Forest Grove.

Graveside Services with Full Military Honors will be held on Friday, December 18, 2020 at the Mt. View Memorial Gardens in Forest Grove, with Pastor Bryan Austring, of Helvetia Community Church, officiating. Full Honors will be under the direction of the United Stated Marine Corps and the V.F.W. Martin J. Ryan Post #2666 in Hillsboro. Concluding Rites and Vault Interment will follow at the cemetery.

THOMAS LESLIE BUTLER, JR. was born November 8, 1922 in Marysville, Kansas, the son of the late Thomas Leslie Butler, Sr. and Jessie (Messick) Butler. He was raised and received his education in Marysville, Kansas

He was a Veteran of World War II, having joined the United States Marine Corps on March 18, 1943. Tom served for three years, until receiving his honorable discharge on July 18, 1946 from the Marine Barracks in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyards, at the rank of Sergeant. Tom served alongside his fellow Marines during the Battle of Iwo Jima, until he was injured on March 17, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and several unit citation awards.

Tom was united in marriage to Lorena Evaline Clinton on August 15, 1942 in Vancouver, Washington. Following their marriage, they resided in the Hillside district of Forest Grove, before moving to the Cornelius community. On November 8, 1948, they moved to their present home in the Helvetia community, where he resided since.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena, on August 25, 1993 in Helvetia, Oregon, after celebrating over fifty-one years of marriage together.

Tom had worked as a lead man for Forest Fiber Products, later for Stimson Lumber Company in Gaston for thirty-three years, until he retired in 1984.

He was a longtime and active member of the Helvetia Community Church.

Among his special interests, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and raising cows.

Tom was also preceded in death by his parents, Thomas, Sr. and Jessie Butler; his brother, Jesse Butler and his sister, Rachel Simmons.

Survivors include his three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Dick Ireland, of Westport, Oregon; Sandra and Roger Bailey, Sr., of Cornelius, Oregon and Donna and Steven Porter, Sr., of Helvetia, Oregon and his son, William “Bill” Butler, of Helvetia, Oregon.

Also surviving his eight grandchildren, Richard Ireland, of Westport, Oregon; Thomas Ireland and his wife, Heidi, of Warren, Oregon; Leslie Cline, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Dan Bailey, Jr. and his wife, Lani of Cornelius, Oregon; Denise Bailey, of Carmichael, California; Trevin Butler, of Helvetia, Oregon; Travis Butler, of Helvetia, Oregon; Steven “Gil” Porter and his wife, Lowana, of Caronport, Saskatchewan, Canada and his seven great-grandchildren, Alena, Lorrenzo and Kersey Bailey; Kaitlyn Cardinal and her husband, Aaron; Felix Porter; Olivia Butler and Matilda Porter and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that remembrance contributions be made to the Oregon Humane Society in his memory.
