Her obituary posted on line on 26 Oct 2021 by the Middletown NY Times Herald-Record:

Edith E. Henderson
April 7, 1932 - October 17, 2021
Newburgh, NY

Edith E. Henderson was born April 7th, 1932 at St. Luke's Hospital, Newburgh, NY to parents DeWitt Bizzell and Sally Morrison-Bizzell. She was predeceased by brothers, Clarence, Edward and Eugene Bizzell and sister, Onner-lee Starke.

At the early age of 12, she lost her mom and for a small allowance her dad and big brothers encouraged her to cook for the family. Standing on a little stool, she did the best she could. Developing her love for cooking and baking, the holiday season was her favorite time of the year baking carrot cakes, sweet potato pies and bread puddings; she quickly became known for the best meals in town.

She was affectionately called Sister, Aunt Sister, Miss Sister, Miss Edie, Mom, Mommy, Gram, Grandma, Big Mama, Pom Pom and Sweets. She was the matriarch of the family and answered lovingly to whatever name she was called.

Married to Mark L. Henderson, she was the proud mother of six: Marsha Henderson (Newburgh), Cynthia Henderson-Pearson (James) (Houston, TX) and Meredith L. Henderson (Guilderland, NY); pre-deceased by three sons: William "Pete", Harold and Melvin. She raised several grandchildren as her own – Yalonda, Tatonya and Marvin (Houston, TX). These three grandchildren had a special seat next to her in the kitchen which was filled with love and good food. Granddaughter Edith Arnetta Frazier (Middletown, NY) holds a special place in Mom's heart not only because she shares her name, but over the years has always taken time to visit and braid her hair. She has many grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren plus a host of nieces and nephews including special nephews, William Starke (Stevenson, MD), Paul Starke (Lynchburg, VA) and James Starke (Deceased).

Edith's love for people is evident as the table and doors of her home were always open for those who needed a meal and a place to stay. There were so many who received blessings over the years.

She attended Newburgh City Schools and retired from Castle Point Veteran's Administration, Castle Point, NY

Her community involvement included severing as a Foster-Grandparent at the Head Start Program of Newburgh. She also worked with the Democratic Committee and served as a poll watcher for many years.

Her church involvement began as a young child where she attended Sunday School and was a member of the youth choir. Over the years her involvement has been steadfast where she gave unselfishly.

As a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church of Newburgh she served as: Den Mother of Cub Scout/Boy Scouts Troops (AME Zion); Member of the Lay Council; Member of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society; Supply Secretary; Church Women United; World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women; National Council of Negro Women; Life Matron Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society

And other special committees at the Church. At the New York Annual Conference held in June 2021 she received her "Heart for Overseas Missions" pin.

Edith was a God-fearing woman who always gave her best. She made sure her children had every opportunity and she was the epitome of courage and strength. Her memory and legacy will be ever dear to all who's lives she touched.

Mrs. Henderson will have a Walkthrough from 10-11 a.m., Friday, October 29, 2021 at Newburgh AME Zion Church, 111 Washington Street, Newburgh, NY. Funeral service is at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Milton Stubbs will officiate. (Face Mask REQUIRED) Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor, NY.
