Kenneth Eugene Watkins, 80, of Hutchinson, KS formerly of Ponca, NE passed away Friday, October 22, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with Reverend Kimberly Belken officiating. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Kenneth was born October 12, 1941 in Sioux City, IA, the son of Adelbert and Dorothy (Spencer) Watkins. He grew up in rural Ponca and graduated from Waterbury High School in 1955. After high school, Kenneth entered the United States Air Force from 1956 until he was honorably discharged in 1963. He married JoAnn Maslonka January 31, 1964. They lived in Dixon and Dakota counties until finding their home in Homer and together they raised daughters Stacey, Sarah and Stephanie.

Kenneth worked in maintenance at IBP for 13 years, later relocating to southeast Nebraska and retiring from Farmland in Crete, NE. He returned to northeast Nebraska and married longtime friend Sandra Matteen April 22, 2002. Ultimately, they found the home of their dreams outside Ponca where they lived until her death Dec 7, 2017. He enjoyed country living, horses, western movies, country music and Elvis.

Kenneth was proud of his service to his country and to others. He was a member of the American Legion, Airforce Association, and the American Veteran's Association. In the American Legion, he held the offices of Vice Commander and Commander for both Post 307 in South Sioux City and District 3 in Nebraska. He also served as secretary in the Air Force Association. He also volunteered to provide transportation for veterans to and from medical appointments and was a volunteer with Hospice of Siouxland from 2012-2020 where he provided companionship to hospice patients and earned the Hospice Volunteer of the Year award in 2017.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, brother Keith Watkins, and wife Sandy.

He is survived by his daughters: Stacey (Ed) Martin of Hutchinson, KS, Sarah (David) Goddard of Arvada, CO, and Stephanie Watkins of Arvada, CO; six grandchildren, sister Sue (Ray) Maynard of Pocahontas, AR, one niece, one nephew, and several cousins.
