John E. McCutcheon age 80 passed on October 22, 2021, in Upatoi, GA at his home with his wife, Sylvia and friend, Nancy, at his side. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at 11AM at Parkhill Cemetery.
John Edwin McCutcheon was born on April 13, 1941, in Zaneville, Ohio, to the late William T. McCutcheon and Clarice Moore. He was the youngest of 10 siblings of whom a baby girl died in infancy. His sisters were Josephine sheets, Helen Shankle (Norm), Peggy Schneider (Charles), Bess Hittle(max) and Sally Hampton (Charles). All his sisters lived in and around Zanesville and Columbus, Ohio, and they are all deceased except for Bess, his youngest sister. His brothers were Glenn McCutcheon (Phylis), William T. McCutcheon, Jr. (Kathleen), and Joseph McCutcheon (Evelyn). All his brothers lived in same area and are deceased.
Being a graduate of Zaneville High School in 1959, he worked in a feed mill until he joined the US Army in 1961, and he was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA, where he met his wife, Sylvia Whiteford, the love of his life for 57 wonderful years. They met at Edgewood Methodist Church in 1963 when they were attending choir practice. Having a beautiful bass voice and reading music, he sang in church choirs for almost 50 years with Sylvia accompanying him on the organ. On their first date, Sylvia told him she was going to marry him, and sure enough on November 30, 1963, they were married at Edgewood Methodist Church.
John was a member of Midland Methodist Church of which he held every office that could be held. Being a boy scout leader was really a joy for him, and he did a masterful job at it. Being a member of The Coweta Fall Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution was one of the highlights of his life. He was their registrar for 15 years, and he accomplished much in the organization, receiving many awards for his works. At Calhoun Sand and Gravel, he was an office manager in his early career in the 70s. In the mid-70s, he owned a hardware store in Waverly Hall, GA and stayed in business for over 10 years at which time, he closed the store and began working at Hamilton Hardware in Columbus, GA. He was Mr. Hardware. He loved going to work there every day and helping people. When he was 63, he retired due to heart problems.
He was Sylvia's, at home man, to do all chores outside that needed to be done. He loved helping her out with the grounds so much. Sitting out at his barn, watching the birds was a favorite pastime of his until he could no longer walk out there. Sylvia would take him sightseeing in the golf cart around the neighborhood which he really enjoyed those outings.
While he was in good health, John and Sylvia traveled to many places such as China, England, Scotland, Alaska and all over the United States. His bucket list had Russia and Egypt on it, but he never got to go because of his poor health.
His home in Upatoi was his pride and joy. Watching from his favorite place to sit, the screened in back porch, he watched and enjoyed Sylvia doing yardwork which she loved doing that he could no longer help with.
