The family of Richard Howard Farrell, are saddened to announce the passing of our brother, age 76, on May 20, 2017 at home in Hamilton Ontario. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Howard and Mary (Logue) Farrell.
Dick grew up in Whitney Pier and was a member of Holy Redeemer Church and Branch 128, Royal Canadian Legion. As a young man he moved to Ontario and worked at various jobs, until 1991 when he joined Upper Lakes Shipping as Galley seamen, porter, second cook and chief cook, until his retirement in 2005. His last vessel was the Stephen B Roman.
He is survived by sisters, Paula Filek, Enfield, NS, Margaret Farrell, Milford, NS and Dianne (Bob) Zgoda, Lackawanna, NY; two brothers, William Murray (Francesca), Dedham, Mass. and Gerald (Shirley) Farrell, Sydney, NS. Also surviving are nieces, Carol (Jerry) Phaneuf, Milford, NS, Colleen (Brad) Fiander, Lakeside, NS, Emily (Ryan) Zgoda, Pittsburgh, PA, and nephews, Todd (Sean) Farrell, Boston, Mass., Stephen (Sue) Farrell, Hatchet Lake, NS, Tim (Rose Marie) Davis, Ayr, ON, Billy Davis, ON. and Craig (Lindsay) Zgoda, Buffalo, NY.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his long-time partner, Joanne Ripa, formerly of Orangedale, NS, and one sister, Jean Davis, Kitchener, ON.
Cremation has taken place and a family memorial service will held in Sydney at a later date.
