Sandra K. Martin, of Hebron, MD, was born on November 26, 1952 to the late Floyd and Lillie B. Coward. She departed this life on October 20, 2021, at her home surrounded by loved ones.
Sandra attended Mardela High School and graduated in the Class of 1970. After graduating from high school, she later attended Delaware Technical Community College. Sandra started her work career at Sam Seidel Insurance Company, then joined the FBI in Washington D.C. She later retired from USDA, Rural Development DE-MD as Multi-Family Housing Loan Specialist on August 3, 2010 after 33 years of service. After retiring from USDA, she became a licensed Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster.
On April 29, 1972, she was united in Holy Matrimony with Fred Martin, Jr. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Freda Morris, and one son Fred Martin, III. Her family was the center of her life. She loved her husband, children and grand children dearly. She instilled in her family love, respect and living your life in a Godly manner.
Sandra grew up in the church and had a love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1972, she joined First Baptist Church of Salisbury, MD where Rev. Dr. Lewis N. Watson is now Pastor. She has served on the Finance Committee, Missionary Ministry, Senior Usher Ministry for 15 years, and The Shepherd's Table (Soup Kitchen Ministry).
She joined Success Temple #154, I.B.P.O.E. of W. on April 24, 1984 and became Senior Mother of Success Juvenile Class #155. Under the direction of Sis. Martin, the Juvenile Class sponsored Black History Programs, marched in parades, had fashion shows, celebrated birthdays, visited the library, had their ritualistic meetings, and made donations to worthwhile causes, even as far away as Africa. On August 15, 1985, Sis. Martin was recognized as Outstanding Senior Mother of the Junior and Juvenile Department. She was appointed as Deputy Supervisor by Mrs. Jean C.W. Smith, Grand Daughter Ruler in November 1986-1995.
She served as Daughter Ruler, Vice Daughter Ruler, Assistant Daughter Ruler, Financial Secretary, Escort, Trustee, and Trustee Chairperson of Success Temple. Sandra joined Bessie Leonard & Ethel K. Jews Council in 1984 where she served as Loyal Daughter Ruler, Loyal Vice Daughter Ruler, Loyal Asst. D. R., Loyal Escort, and Loyal Trustee. She was appointed by the late Loyal Daughter Ruler Joyce Torney as Ways and Means Chairperson and served from 1989-1996.
She received her Past State Presidents honor in 1985 through the Athletic Department. She served as financial secretary for the National Youth Council and received a "Dedication Award" on July 17, 1993 from the National Youth Council of the Eastern Shore of MD. Sandra was appointed as Directress of the Civil Liberties Department in 2002. As Directress, she brought back the Civil Liberties luncheon in 2005. She received her Past Grand Daughter Ruler's honor in 1986 in Los Angeles, CA.
Sandra was elected as President of the Eastern Shore Past Grand Dgt. Ruler's Circle in October 2006-2008. She also served as 1st and 2nd Vice President. Sandra received her appointment as Grand Regional Directress for Region II in March 2006-2014. She was appointed as Chairpersons of the first Logistic Committee and served as the Contest Manager for the National Oratorical Contest in 2013.
She joined the Wicomico County NAACP Branch #7028 in 2002 and served as recording secretary for two years and treasurer for 14 years. She served as 1st Vice President from 2016-2018 and Co-Chaired the 2017 Freedom Fund Banquet. She received the NAACP Branch President's Award in 2018.
She was appointed to the Wicomico County Democratic Central Committee in 2006 and served as Asst. Recording Secretary and Recording Secretary. She served as the Corresponding Secretary for the Democratic Club of the Wicomico County.
Sandra was appointed as Grand District Deputy of Light of Crisfield Temple #86 in October 2014 by Mrs. Margaret D. Scott, Grand Daughter Ruler. One of her favorite positions. She was Chairperson for the Queen City Lodge #1051 & Success Temple #154 State Grant Committee for repairs to Elks Home and Chairperson for Tri-State Association Ball for the newly elected Grand Exalted Ruler, Attorney Leonard J. Polk, Jr., Co-Chair of House Committee, member of Slot Committee, and Chairperson for Success Temple's 100th Anniversary.
She leaves to cherish loving memories: a devoted husband of 49 years, Fred Martin, Jr.; one daughter, Freda Morris (Derrick) of Salisbury, MD; one son, Fred Martin, III (Jennifer) of Blythwood, SC; 10 grandchildren, Deja, Tyrai, Elessa, Nya, William, Fred IV, Brianna, Maddison, Erica, and Ashton; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward B. Coward (Alma) of Huntingtown, MD; three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Hull (Hillary), Dorothy Gale (Robert), and Jo Irene Gaile, all of Salisbury, MD; one brother-in-law, Henry Martin (Desiree) of Salisbury; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. She deeply loved Mrs. Lois Wilburn, whom she had adopted as her second mother.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Annie Lyles, and brothers-in-law, William Lyles and Winfred "Elmer" Gaile.
Sandra believed firmly that it is better to give than to receive, and that you should treat others the way you want to be treated. She was a distinguished woman with many honors and accomplishments throughout her life.
Mrs. Martin will lie in repose on Friday, October 29, 2021, from 5 to 8 PM and Saturday, October 30, 2021, from 10 to 11 AM at First Baptist Church Family Life & Cultural Center, 528 Booth Street, Salisbury. The funeral service will begin at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens, 27260 Ocean Gateway, Hebron.
