He was the son of Samuel Kay Johnson and Melissa Sizemore Johnson of Trout, West Virginia, now deceased. Darrell was predeceased by his wife Vivian Johnson. He is survived by one sister Barbara Whitcomb of Ronceverte, West Virginia. He was predeceased by five (5) brothers and four (4) sisters.
Darrell moved to Baltimore at an early age and met the love of his life, Vivian. Darrell and Vivian built their family home in Ellicott City in 1958, and he lived there until 2021. He was a proud Ellicott City resident and a member of UA Plumbers & Steamfitters Local #486. He was a self-taught musician, song writer and publisher. Country music and bluegrass were his passion, where he performed for many years as a member of "The Rhythm Lads" and "The Kinfolk" bands. Darrell was meticulous about everything he built, repaired or maintained, and was always available to help anyone.
Family and friends meant everything to Darrell. He was affectionately called "Poppy" by all, and "Daddy" by his daughters. If you knew him you loved him. He never met a stranger. One of the original residents of Ellicott City, he took great joy in welcoming many new neighbors over (7) decades.
Darrell's family welcomes friends and family to a visitation at Harry H. Witzke's Family Funeral Home on Tuesday October 26 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. Graveside services will be private.
