Archie Glenn Fincher, 92, died on October 23, 2021 in his hometown of Monroe, North Carolina.

His prayers were answered as he peacefully passed away in his sleep after a recent health setback. Through the years, he stayed strong in his Christian faith and steadfast in his love of family and friends.

Archie grew up in Waxhaw, North Carolina and graduated from Walter Bickett High School in 1947. While in high school, Archie was a leader in Future Farmers of America, and N.C. State recognized him as the top vocational agriculture student in North Carolina. Archie attended Duke University for one year before joining the U.S. Air Force. In 1949, Archie married the love of his life, Annie Helms. It was a storybook romance that began when they met while working together behind the soda fountain at Gamble's Drug Store in downtown Monroe. They were married for 60 years until Annie's death in 2009.

Upon joining the USAF, Archie trained as an air traffic controller and was stationed at Langley AFB in Hampton, Virginia. In 1952, he was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant, and he started his career with the Federal Aviation Administration. He worked at Patrick Henry Airport in Newport News, Virginia, and transferred to Byrd Airport in Richmond, Virginia in 1956.

Archie retired in 1986 as the deputy chief of the Richmond tower. He loved his job and approached it, as he did all things in life, with meticulous attention to detail and professionalism. After a short-lived attempt at retirement, Archie returned to work as the manager of the Book Press in Colonial Williamsburg, a favorite spot for both he and Annie. Archie retired for good in 1993, and he and Annie moved home to Monroe.

In retirement, he continued his lifelong passion for reading, and he volunteered at Habitat for Humanity where he organized all incoming book donations. Archie grew up attending Siler Presbyterian Church in Waxhaw, served as a deacon and elder at Sandston Presbyterian Church in Richmond, and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Monroe.

Archie was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Helms Fincher; a sister, Shelby Holley; and brothers, William Fincher and Joe Fincher.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara King; and three sons, Michael (Debra); Joel (Danielle); and Christopher (Kathleen). Archie was the proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Phillip Fincher (fiancée Charlotte Waggoner); Kristen Fincher Gilliam (Travis); Brandon Fincher; Garrett Fincher (Patsy); Kendall Fincher Allen (Jacob); Thomas Fincher and Charles Fincher. Great grandchildren include Ella and Holden Gilliam; Kaitlin, Makenzie, Taylor and Millie Fincher; and Tatum Allen.

A special thanks to his care givers from Home Instead, especially Heather Sather, and the ever-watchful neighbors Matt and Petra Furjanic and Dr. John Vick and Sarah Vick.

The family will receive friends and relatives at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe on October 30 at 2:00 p.m.
