Gary was born in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Earl Mitchell and Delma Lockhart Mitchell on July 5, 1935. Gary is also preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Mitchell.
Gary lived in Durham, NC for 48 years. He received his bachelor's degree at the University of Louisville, his master's degree at Duke University, and his PhD from Florida State University. He was a researcher and professor for 48 years at North Carolina State University. He also worked at Columbia University for 6 years.
Gary is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Mitchell and his son, Scott Mitchell of Charlotte, NC.
