Terry "Tuff" Ryan was a writer, poet, cartoonist, and book editor. She was the sixth of Evelyn Ryan's ten children. She spent her childhood watching her mother winning first prizes as a result of her talent for writing. Inhereting her mother's talent, Terry graduated with a degree in English and Journalism from Bowling Green State University. She spent most of her adult life in San Francisco. She wrote "T.O. Sylvester", a comic strip for the San Francisco Chronicle. However, Terry Ryan is known for her masterpiece "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio", a memoir of her life and that of her family, especially her mother, a 1950s housewife with 10 children who provided for the family by winning contests. The rights for her memoirs were sold to DreamWorks SKG. A film version of the book was released in 2005, starring Julianne Moore and Woody Harrelson. Terry served as a consultant, and also appeared as herself in the film. During filming, Terry was diagnosed with a stage IV brain cancer. She passed away at her home in San Francisco.
