MATHIAS J. HUBER
Mathias J. Huber, 86, of 500 N. Arcade St., Gladwin, died Wednesday, August 14, at the Gladwin Nursing Home. Born in Grout Township, March 27, 1888, he was the son of Sebastian and Regina Baum Huber, and a lifetime resident of the county. He and the former Miss Adelia Swinehart were married July 15, 1909, in Grout Township. They farmed in Grout until 1930 when they moved to the McClure Farm, on N. M-18, where they farmed for 7 years. They started a milk processing plant, known as Huber's Dairy, and a city door-to-door milk delivery route at the farm in 1930, moving it to Gladwin City in 1938 and also opening an ice cream parlor on North Silverleaf Street. Following the erection of the building on Cedar Avenue, now housing Huber's Restaurant, the base of operations was moved there.
Mr. Huber retired in 1949, and his son, Donald, assumed direction of the business. Always active in community affairs, he served on the Grout district school board, the Gladwin City Council, the County Board of Supervisors, the Board of Supervisors, the Board of County Road Commissioners, and the World War II Rationing Board. He was a leader in re-organizing the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce in the early '40's and served as president for several years. Mr. Huber was a member of the IOOF Lodge, the Gladwin Rotary Club, and the East Michigan Tourist Association.
Surviving are his wife, Adelia, 3 sons, Duane and Donald of Gladwin, Ovid of Davison; 8 daughters, Mrs. Leo (Loraine) Flynn, Mrs. David (Edith) Hamilton, Mrs. Maysell Redman, Mrs. Kenneth (Maxine) Young, and Mrs.Richard (Patricia) Priemer, all of Gladwin, Mrs. Wilmer (Wanda) Tarrant of Montrose, Mrs. Richard (Eunice) List of Bay City,and Mrs. A. J. (Ruth) Otterbacher of Columbia, S.C.; 48 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home with the R ev. Byron Hatch officiating. Burial was in Grout Township Cemetery.
