Catherine Phlegar Henson, 100, passed away peacefully at her son's residence in Waynesboro, Va. on Monday, October 18, 2021.

A native of Virginia she was the wife of the late David E. Matheney Sr. and the daughter of Herman Marion Phlegar, Sr. and Nannie Carroll Phlegar, both deceased. Catherine was a strong Christian woman who was a member of New Life Christian Ministries and currently attended Fishersville United Methodist Church. She was known for being a great cook. Catherine enjoyed gospel music and singing.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who is survived by two sons, David E. Matheney Jr. and Stephen W. Matheney; three grandchildren, Lori Huelsman and husband, Brian, Jeremiah Preston Matheney, and Heather Bass and husband, Chris; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by five brothers; two sisters; and her daughter-in-law, Freida Matheney.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021 in Sherwood Memorial Park with Pastor Gary Alls officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Waynesboro, Va.

A memorial service will be held at Fishersville United Methodist Church, 1600 Jefferson Hwy., Fishersville, Va., on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 11 a.m. Wearing a mask is recommended.
