John was proceeded in death by his wife, Louauna Shumate Byrd; parents John Abbott and Grace Floyd Byrd and granddaughter, Caroline Byrd Keeney.
John is survived by his son, J. Abbott Byrd III, M.D. and his wife Allison D. Byrd, M.D., and his daughter, Mary-Taliaferro "Tollie" Byrd Keeney and her husband, Bruce B. Keeney, Sr. Also surviving him are his grandchildren, B. Bennett Keeney, Jr. (Sarah), Jennifer Byrd Paice, M.D. (Timothy)., Catherine Byrd Jeydel, J.D. (Peter), William A Byrd, M.D. (Rachel), and Carter T. Keeney, J.D. (Taylor). John is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, Virginia, Sammy, Ann Tucker, Max, Taliaferro, Charlotte, Frances, Byrdie, Claire, Jackson, Audrey, and Henry.
John grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in Parksley. After graduating from Parksley High School, he continued his education at the University of Richmond, class of 1943. While attending UR, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order upon graduation, John attended Medical College of Virginia (now part of Virginia Commonwealth University) and graduated in 1947. During medical school, he served in the Armed Forces in the V-12 program. Following graduation, he trained in Internal Medicine at Lewis Gale Hospital in Roanoke VA. Following his training, he served in the U.S. Navy, as a medical officer on the U.S. S. Barton. His ship was struck by enemy fire and he was instrumental in saving many lives, for which he received a commendation. Upon completion of his service, John did a fellowship in Internal Medicine at The Lahey Clinic, in Boston MA. After completing his training, John set up the practice of internal medicine in 1954 in Norfolk, which he continued until his retirement in 1989.
John and Lou moved to Virginia Beach in 1990 and enjoyed their retirement. Joining Virginia Beach United Methodist church, John became involved with the Urban Ministry of the church, which gave him much pleasure. John was a long-time member of Princess Anne Country Club, where he was an avid and proficient golfer. He also enjoyed reading, particularly history. Lou and John were able to travel after his retirement to see many of the places he often read about. He also cherished spending time with his family boating and fishing in the Elizabeth River and the Bay. John and Lou also spent many wonderful times playing bridge, both for fun and in competitions. He was proud to have achieved the level of a Bronze Life Master, in the American Contract Bridge League
John loved his wife, Lou and his children, who he always encouraged to be the best they could be. He loved being Guanay to his six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts. at 2002 Laskin Road on October 23 at 11am. Interment will be held immediately following the service, at Eastern Shore Cemetery at 2020 Laskin Road.
