Martin Luther Freeland was one of 10 children born to John Sedwick Freeland and Mary Jane Lindsey Freeland in Monmouth, Shawnee, Kansas (near Topeka). On May 21, 1886 he married Mary Levina Rice. They were the parents of 7 children (Faith, Hope, Grace Gertrude, Paul Lindsey, John Rice, Anna Ruth and Edward Sedwick), the latter 4 of whom lived to adulthood. In 1899 Martin Luther and Mary sold their farm and began training to become missionaries. In the November of 1900 they went to Equador as missionaries for Gospel Union Mission of Kansas City, Missouri where they worked with the Jivaro Indians. They remained in Equador until June of 1911 when Martin Luthers poor health forced them to return to the United States.
