He was born Sept. 6, 1922, in Lawrence, the son of Harry X. Sr. and Ethel V. (Wright) Winters. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1941 and attended Kansas University.
Mr. Winters served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation machinist mate, second class. He was a Lawrence city commissioner, Douglas County deputy sheriff, investigator for Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control and later retired as superintendent of Lawrence Paper Co. He also owned and operated marinas at state lakes in Douglas and Osage counties and at Lone Star Lake. He entertained for many years with his big band, The Harry Winters Combo.
He married Mary A. Clough on Sept. 26, 1942. She survives of the home.
Mr. Winters died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Harry X. Winters Jr., 81, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Other survivors include a son, Scott, Lawrence; three daughters, Catherine Hess and Jennifer Stewart, both of Lawrence, and Linda Miner, Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Shirley Wagner, Baldwin; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
