Born April 19, 1849, in Mississippi, Ezra Lafayette Jennings arrived in the early days of Texas with his parents, Ezra Lee M and Jane Hudson Anderson Jennings. The family included his sisters; Martha Jane and Mary Louisa, and brothers; William A, Reddick Napoleon, James Cornelius, DL, and Charles Washington.
The Civil War brought a great loss to the family with the death of Ezra Lee M, at the Battle of Chickamauga, in 1863 Georgia. Ezra's mother was now a single parent to eight children, and Ezra was without a father at the age of 14. Jane would remain single until 1867 when she married Armeneous D Tally, a gentleman twenty years her junior. The following year Jane gave birth to Alma A and Walter Armeneous Tally.
Ezra met and married a young Texas woman, Miss Sicily Ann McGaughey, daughter of Leroy G and Caroline Beatty McGaughey. On May 29, 1873, in Madisonville, Texas, they began the twenty-nine years that they would share. Nine children were born in this marriage, four sons; Thomas Napoleon, James Theodore, Ezra Lee Jennings, and Charles Ellis, five daughters; Emma Lula Busby, Mattie Ophelia Smith, Daisy Lillian Dixon, Susan Ella Glenn, and Lora Ethel McCain.
Ezra died on December 17, 1902, in Falls County, Texas, at the age of 53. Sicily lived an additional forty years as his widow.
