Funeral services are 11a.m., Tuesday December 11, 2007 at Ackerman United Methodist Church in Ackerman with burial in the Enon Cemetery. Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman is handling the arrangements.
Burney was a lifelong resident of Ackerman. He graduated from Winston Academy and Mississippi State University. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Burney served as Alderman of Ackerman before becoming mayor in 2001. He was a member of Ackerman United Methodist Church his entire life where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and Head Usher.
Survivors include: his mother, Sara Mitchell Burney Mize of Oxford; sister, Louise Burney of Madison; uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Mitchell of Louisville; cousins, Lee Mitchell, his wife Patty and their children Laura Catherine and Robert; Nancy Mitchell Cole, her husband Jack, and their children John, Mitchell, and Caroline of Monroe, LA.
His extended family includes Dr. and Mrs. James Russell Dumas of Prentiss, their children, Irene, Russ, Sorena, John Dale, Jeremiah, and their families; Kenny and Kathy King and their children Matthew and Katie; Morgan and Lynn Scribner and their children, Aimee and Pat of Ackerman.
Preceded in death by his father William Bruce Burney Jr.
Pallbearers are Russ, John Dale, and Jeremiah Dumas, Kenny and Matthew King, Morgan and Pat Scribner, Lee Mitchell, Jack Cole, and Eric Chambers. Honorary pallbearers are the Ackerman Board of Aldermen and the city employees, James Russell Dumas, Frank Black, Jimmy Ralph McClure, Jim McClure, Ryan Jewell, Gary Oswalt, John Furr, Kent Henson, Glendal Reid and Joey Stephenson.
