He was born in Amsterdam on December 16, 1952 a son of Leslie and Anna Mary Register Smith and attended local schools.
Sonny was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Smith was employed in the leather industry for over forty years and retired in 2015 from Colonial Tanning in Gloversville.
Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing, and projects involving carpentry. He was affectionately known as "the family supervisor", and more importantly as a fantastic "bunny sitter." Sonny loved spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Jane Pendlebury and Katherine Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Frye Smith, whom he married on August 2, 1975; three children, Kelly (Bob) Gardner of Amsterdam, Leslie "Smitty" (Danielle) Smith of Gloversville, and Christopher (Shana) Smith of Broadalbin; eight grandchildren, Kayla Reyell, Nicole Bates, Schuyler, Nolan, Owen, Colby, Adrianna, and Leah Smith; four great-grandchildren, Dominic and Natalie Reyell, and Liam and Adalyn German; his father- and mother-in-law, Lewis and Marion Frye; his coffee buddy, Gary Morin; and his special friends who are as close as family, the Guyette family.
A graveside service will be held at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery.
