Clarence Willard Davis, 97, died peacefully in his sleep at Wake Med Hospital, Cary following a brief illness on October 18, 2021.

He grew up during the Great Depression. His father, Charles, was a grocery store meat cutter and his mother, Maude, was a seamstress. He had two brothers, Gordon and Bill. As a youngster, Clarence picked tobacco on his uncle's farm. The family moved to Asheboro, NC when he was 12.

He attended Fayetteville Street School in Asheboro and worked jobs from shining shoes downtown to various jobs in local grocery stores. The family attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Asheboro. When Clarence graduated from high school, he was drafted into the army infantry and served in Italy during WWII. He was twice wounded in the leg and received purple hearts. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he returned home.

When Clarence returned to Asheboro from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Paisley. He then went into the grocery business with two friends, Al and Russell Walker. The store, Food Line, eventually grew into a thirteen store chain with operations in the greater Asheboro / Piedmont area. Clarence and Margaret had 4 boys - Charles, Lee, Doug and Steve. All of them grew up working with Clarence in the Food Line grocery stores.

Clarence was an avid golfer and was a founding member of Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro. He was recently designated an honorary lifetime member of this Club by the board of directors. He also served as President of the local Lions Club chapter in Asheboro.

A good natured and optimistic man, Clarence was a fastidious dresser and an enthusiastic golfer. He enjoyed robust health and sported a full head of hair throughout his life. A longtime member of the YMCA, he worked out daily until he moved to assisted living in Cary. He relished the company of his extended family, especially celebratory dinners during birthdays and holidays. He had an affinity for chocolate cake and milkshakes.

The Davis family attended West Bend United Methodist Church where Clarence was Chairman of the Finance and Pastor/Parish Relations committees for many years. His wife of 67 years predeceased him in 2013, as did his eldest son Charles. Clarence remained in Asheboro until he moved to Cary in 2019.

He is survived by sons Lee Davis (Melinda) of Raleigh, Doug Davis (Colleen) of Holly Springs, Steve Davis (Karen) of Fuquay-Varina, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, 10/23/2021, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM at West Bend United Methodist Church in Asheboro. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome at West Bend United Methodist Church, 1080 Albemarle Rd, Asheboro, NC 27205, or Military Missions in Action, 411 N Judd Parkway NE, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.
