Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as the Sergeant Major of the 26th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on May 27, 1861. He served as the regiment's top enlisted man until January 1, 1863, when he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company I. He served with the company through the Battle of Chancellorsville, where he was severely wounded on May 4, 1863. His wounds were such that he could no longer perform service in the field, and on November 9, 1863 he was transferred to Company F of the 7th Veterans Reserve Corps. He served with the VRC until his muster out of the service.
