Entrepreneur, Business Magnate. Founder of the Booths Supermarket chain. In 1847, aged just 19, he opened his first shop, called The China House, in Blackpool, as a tea dealer. His aim was to "sell the best food and drink available, in attractive stores, staffed with first class assistants." Eight years later he opened a second, larger shop in Chorley. By 1863, thousands of Lancashire people had developed an admiration for the quality of his goods. Thanks to changes in UK licensing laws, E.H.Booth & Co added wine and liquor to their range. Three more locations were added to the estate in the following years, Preston in 1867, Lytham in 1879 and Blackburn in 1884. The business was incorporated as a private limited company in 1896. He was a Preston magistrate and councillor, and also a philanthropist, being a founding trustee of local children's homes. His enduring legacy is seen in the family brand now encompassing twenty-seven retail stores in five counties of Northern England, namely Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Cheshire.
