Obituary of Margaret Ann Berry
Margaret Ann O'Neill Berry passed away on October 14, 2021. She was born on February 26, 1930, in Birmingham, AL to Ann Gunn Davidson Miller and Edward Joseph O'Neill. Margaret Ann grew up in the College Hills neighborhood of Birmingham, attending Graymont Elementary School and Phillips High School. She earned bachelor's degrees from both The University of Alabama and Birmingham-Southern College.

At Birmingham-Southern College, she joined Phi Beta Phi Fraternity and developed lifelong friendships with a group of ladies who called themselves "The Lunch Bunch." The group has met for lunch every month for nearly seventy years.

After graduating college, Margaret Ann taught in the Birmingham School System at Kennedy Elementary School. She later left teaching to pursue a graduate degree in Music Education at Florida State University.

In 1959, Margaret Ann married Walter Treutlen Berry, Jr. and thereafter devoted her life to raising her family. She was a longtime member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, where she volunteered her musical talents as a pianist accompanying countless children's choirs. A lover of music, Margaret Ann sang in Canterbury United Methodist Church Choir and Birmingham-Southern Alumni Choir for many years, and she enjoyed attending the Masterworks Series of The Alabama Symphony. As a member of the Mountain Brook Art Association, she frequently showed her paintings at the Association's spring art show. She loved the beach and each year, Margaret Ann and Walter spent the month of September at the beach, where they developed numerous friendships.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, known by her grandchildren as Mimi. Much of her time as a grandparent was spent attending all seven of her grandchildren's numerous arts and sports activities. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter Treutlen Berry, Jr., and her brother, Edward Joseph O'Neill, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Susanne Berry Thomas and son- in-law Jeffery Peter Thomas; her son Walter Edward Berry and daughter-in-law Ruth Denny Berry; her seven grandchildren Peter Treutlen Thomas and his fiancée Mary Elizabeth Branton, William Henry Thomas, Ann Frances Thomas, Adam Anthony Thomas, Lane Margaret Berry, Walter Edward Berry, Jr. and Evelyn Rose Berry; and her cousin Robert M. Seale and his partner James Gilger.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of Kirkwood by the River where she resided the last few months of her life. Also, the family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Princeton Hospital CICU. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Canterbury United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 19 at 11:00 AM with visitation following in the church parlor.
