IN MEMORIAM
Miss Martha Tate, daughter of Nathaniel N. Tate and wife [Sarah Richardson], was born May 6, 1840, in Callaway County, Mo., and was married to Nathan M. Penn Nov. 15, 1860.
After two or three years, they settled on the farm in Montgomery county where they resided until death called them from the trials incident to the life that now is, unto that higher and better life reserved for the saints of God.
To this union 8 children were born, 7 daughters and one son, Luther Penn, of Montgomery City. All of the children survived their parents, and all are married except two – Misses Elton and Susan W. All were present at the funeral except one. Mrs. James L. Withington, of St. Louis. The children present were Mrs. Sallie E. Love, Mrs. Annie C. Boone, Mrs. Maggie D. Cole, Mrs. Lucy J. Tate, with their husbands. There were also 21 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren present.
In 1870 Mrs. Pen united with the Church of Christ at Oak Grove, also her husband; and they remained true to this Covenant until death. Their example and teaching were such that all their children became members of the Christian church.
Mrs. Penn died Tuesday morning, Sept. 20, 1910.
The funeral was conducted at the Oak Grove church in Callaway county, on Wednesday, Sept. 21, the writer officiating. In the presence of a large assembly of their brethren and friends. Her body was laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery, by the side of her husband.
Thus, one by one, the early settlers of our county are passing away. May their children perpetuate the lives of their parents, and never forget their faith and devotion to the church of the Living God.
