Rev. Freeman was born in Bessemer, AL to Erskine and Margaret Freeman on August 12, 1951. A native of Bessemer, he accepted Christ at age 9 and went on to study at the University of Montevallo, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Andersonville Baptist Seminary in Camilla, Georgia. He felt a call to ministry during his freshman year at Montevallo.
Freeman served as minister of music/students at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Bessemer, from 1971 to 1973, then served as pastor of Ruth Baptist Church in Mississippi while he was in seminary in New Orleans. After that, he served as associate pastor of education and youth at Mount Hebron West Baptist Church, Elmore; as pastor of Camellia Baptist Church, Prattville; and as pastor of First Baptist Church, Atmore. He went to serve at Hillwood Baptist in 1987.
