Dwight Steven Bennett (Steve Bennett) September 5, 1947 - April 15, 2012

Steve passed away among family and friends on April 15. He was a man that was loved by many. He could usually be found at his shop laughing and telling tall tales about women, big cranes and race cars (the louder, faster, the better). Steve was a member of Local 12 Operating Engineers for forty-four years. He operated cranes all over the Western United States. Defying gravity, bringing awe to those that watched and even closing down all lanes of the 405 freeway due to an engineer's bad advise. Steve said, "I wouldn't do that..." The engineer should have listened to Steve. The next thing they knew, they were on six o' clock news. Steve was also a 'thirty-second' degree Mason and a Shriner. After retirement, he spent time with his son Michael, catching up on time lost and building race cars at Bennett Motorsports. This was a treasured time for them both. He has left behind many that will dearly miss his laugh, that twinkle in eye, wicked sense of humor and great knowledge about cars. Son Michael, daughter-in-law Angie, grandsons Mikey, Zach and TJ, daughter Rene' her partner Andrew, grandsons Cale and Kelly, ex son-in-law Mike Corwin, sister's Dianna and Phyllis, brother-in-law Richard, cousin Big Mike and his wife Peggy, daughter Karen, son in law Jeff, granddaughters Terilee, Ashley, and grandson Jeffrey, daughter Barbara, granddaughters Shawn and Casey, daughter Sharon, granddaughters Jessica and Jordan, his ex-wife Sallie, several nieces, nephews, cousins and countless numbers of friends. A special thank you to Bruce and his wife Amy for their dedication to Steve in his last days. We will miss him dearly and know that he is once again young, free, chasing girls, operating cranes and driving fast cars. Drive on Steve! Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Pavilion on April 24, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. A celebration of Steve's life will follow at 9900 Metherly Hill Drive Bakersfield, California 93312.
