Lauri Stanerson, age 86, of Radcliffe, IA, died on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, IA.

Loretta "Lauri" Marie Antionette (Shebenik) Stanerson was born at home in the country between North Chicago and Waukegan, IL to John and Mary Shebenik. The third of ten children, she always talked fondly of growing up in a loving extended family close to the shore of Lake Michigan.

She loved to swim and passed this love on to her children and grandchildren. She attended parochial school through the eighth grade, then upon graduating Waukegan High School, she took bookkeeping courses.

Lauri was a bookkeeper for various places, including car dealerships and the Great Lakes Naval Base, for many years. She had to pass the Civil Service Exam to work on military bases. During her single years she belonged to a folk dancing troupe which toured part of the US and loved to travel.

She met the love of her life, Frank "Stan" Stanerson, in a bowling league. They were united in marriage in February of 1972 and settled in Waukegan, IL. Nine months later, their daughter, Kathy, was born. Eric followed soon after in 1974. The family spent a year in California before Stan's retirement from the US Navy, then moved to Radcliffe, Iowa in 1977.

Together Stan and Lauri ran a hardware store, first in Radcliffe, then in Hubbard for several years. Lauri also spent time working for the Radcliffe Signal Review. After that, Lauri provided childcare for many years, falling in love with all the kids who passed through her home. For a while, she provided a house cleaning service, making some good friends along the way.

In Radcliffe, she was an active member in the American Legion Auxiliary Post #317 and Our Savior's Lutheran Church for close to 45 years. She was an avid reader, a life-long learner, and loved taking care of her plants and flowers. She treasured her family and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. And she was very proud of her Polish heritage, but also fully embraced her husband's Norwegian heritage.

Those left to cherish her memory are her siblings John (Mary) Shebenik, Lucy (Ed) Jurgaitis, Mary Ann Krolak, Ed (Terry) Shebenik, Jim Shebenik, and Steve Shebenik, sister in-law Chris Shebenik, her children Kathy (Mike) McRoberts and Eric (Cathy Rose) Stanerson, grandchildren Keith (Angie) McRoberts, Lavonne (Keith) Pauley, Sarah McRoberts, Sharon (Michael) Tamashunas, Michael Hall, and Moses McRoberts, and great grandchildren Wyatt, Maya, Essek, Noah, Jacob, Jamie, Jackson, and Henry, and many nieces and nephews.

Lauri was preceded in death by her husband, Stan, her sisters Dolores Gedvilas and Helen Wagner, her brother Tony Shebenik, and her sisters-in-law Esther Helgeson, Ruth Knutson, Naomi Mager, and Mary Bjelland, and brothers-in-law Barney Krolak, Bill Gedvilas, Bill Wagner, John Helgeson, Bill Knutson, Cecil Mager, and Don Bjelland.
