Obituary of Sara Eleanor Carpenter
Another member of Pensacola's greatest generation has left us. Sara Eleanor Fell Carpenter, 101 yrs. of Pensacola, FL, entered into eternal life on October 8, 2021. Eleanor, as she was known, was born on July 9, 1920 in Old Warrington into the George A. Fell Sr. and Lilli Eleanor Nettles Fell family who had been in the Pensacola area since the 1820's. She remembers being carried to safety by her father in waist deep water during the terrible hurricane of 1926. Later the family moved into Pensacola where she grew up with her siblings, Marion (Edwards) and George Fell Jr. She attended Pensacola High School where she was 1938 senior class Secretary and was a member of the Amphion Club. Later she attended Bowling Green College of Commerce where she was selected Miss B.U. (Bowling Green University) and represented the school at the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival and the Tobacco Festival. After graduating college with a Secretarial degree and returning home, Eleanor was chosen Miss Pensacola by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1940 to represent the city at the Orange Bowl Festival. Also that same year, she was chosen as Zelica Grotto's Fiesta Queen at the Colonial George Washington Ball. Eleanor, having met the love of her life, Waitman David Carpenter, at Bowling Green College, married in 1942 becoming Mrs. Eleanor Carpenter. David served in the Pacific during WWll as a Lieutenant Commander and later worked for Arthur Anderson Co. (Philadelphia) and Deloitte Touche (Boston) as a Certified Public Accountant. They had three children, David Jr., Carol, and Richard. While living in Massachusetts, she worked as a secretary in the insurance industry and as the Welcome Wagon hostess for Attleboro, Mass. She continued to live in Attleboro for 30 years until her beloved husband, David, passed away in 1989. She then returned to live near Spanish Trail in Pensacola. She enjoyed many years living in her new home, gardening and hosting her children and grandchildren during summer vacations. In 2006, she moved to Azalea Trace retirement Residence where she enjoyed precious time with friends and her dear sister and brother and their spouses who also lived there. Finally, in 2016, she moved to live for her remaining years with her son and daughter in her former home in Pensacola. Eleanor is treasured by her family for her sweet, kind, and gracious personality. She was an enthusiastic optimist, a devoted wife, wonderful mother, excellent seamstress, cook, and gardener. She was known for sharing her lovely smile with everyone she met. She never spoke ill of others, she welcomed newcomers with warmth and southern hospitality, and she genuinely adored her family – from Pensacola, San Diego, Denver, and New York City. Eleanor gifted us with the strength of her love for her family and caregivers by saying "I love you" and "Thank you for helping me" right to the end of her life. She was a faithful Christian and was active in worshiping at the McIlwain Presbyterian Church as were her parents, George and Lillie Fell and brother, George A. Fell Jr. Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, W. David Carpenter, and her sister, Marion Fell Edwards, and her brother, George A. Fell, Jr. She is survived by her son, W. David Carpenter, Jr., and daughter, Carol Carpenter-Gurski (Dennis) of Pensacola, and son, Dr. Richard Fell Carpenter, (Lynne) of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Brian Gurski (Darly), of NYC and Julie Gurski of Denver, CO. and great grandson, Sebastian Gurski of NYC. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Fell and cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she dearly loved. A memorial visitation will be held at 1:00 pm with a celebration of her long and wonderful life at 2:00 pm at Bayview Memorial Park on Scenic Highway with Chaplain Jim Dietz of Azalea Trace officiating. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park. The Carpenter family extends its special thanks, love, and gratitude to her loving caregivers: Linda Dean, Irene Kennedy, Margaret Ramsey, and Tracy Blackmond who became special friends of the family. And most especially, thanks to her long-time personal physician, Dr. Donald Blackmon who supported her and our family through many years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in loving memory of Sara Eleanor Carpenter to McIlwain Presbyterian Church for music and the Congregational Care Ministry.
