With a passion for life and an insatiable curiosity for knowledge, David Carroll Westley was never short of adventure. The diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer in October served only to invigorate his quest to fill his hands with a fishing rod or shotgun. David died peacefully at home in Thursday's early hours, his wife Nanette by his side. He was 65-years-old. Born on July 1, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah, David spent his childhood getting into, or "weaseling" out of, mischief. At 17, he joined the United States Armed Forces and served in Korea and Germany. He often bragged that the Army gave him a tank before he had a civilian driver's license. After fulfilling his tour honorably, David returned home and lived much of his 20s as a free spirit. He spent a summer working in Hawaii and worked a multitude of jobs in Utah including railroad brakeman, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Deputy and lumberyard foreman.

He received his welding skills from the Utah Technical Trade Institute. Those skills led him to the shipyards of Boston where in 1971 he would meet and, 11 days later, marry Nanette DiMino Westley in Sharon, Massachusettes. They moved to Utah shortly after and built a life together. Their trips to Florida during their retirement were some of the happiest times together. Their son, Michael Nathan Westley, was born in March of 1975 and soon became the pride of David's life. The two took many trips together hunting, camping, fishing, snowmobiling or scuba diving where David's two greatest strengths - as a teacher and father - were ever-present. Shortly before Michael's birth, David gained employment at the Salt Lake Community College as a welding instructor. He would remain there for nearly 30 years and would eventually design the college's metal sculpture curriculum. His artwork adorns buildings throughout the college's Redwood campus - an everlasting legacy to his years of faithful service. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University's School of Engineering. David was involved in several social groups including the Utah Westerners, Mountain Men of the Wasatch, St. Barbara's Society, The Shriners, Knights of Columbus and many others. He is a past Master Mason. He formed many close friendships through these groups and his association with Gallenson's sporting goods store.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Carroll and Pauline Westley; and two sisters, Shirley Seegmiller and Janet Dorset. He is survived by his wife and son; along with brothers, Ernest Jerry Booker (Lerma), Tim Westley (Tupou); and sisters, Charlotte Heinle (Gerard) and Ilene Safford (Bill); brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Esther Feagins; godchild, Cameron Presley, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1700 E. 9800 S., Sandy, Utah, Monday, December 10, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. with a one-hour visitation prior to services. A luncheon will follow in the Parish Hall.
A Committal Service by the Canyon Lodge F&AM, will be conducted at the Lake Hills Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum, 10055 South State St. Sandy on Tuesday Dec. 11th, at 1 p.m.
