From Schaetter Funeral Home:

Harold Wilhelm Fiedler passed on to green pastures Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the age of 102 years, 8 months and 8 days in this life. Harold was living in Rio Rancho New Mexico where he had moved to be with his son Charles and his wife Jane.

Harold was born on Saturday February 1, 1919 to Olga and Lionel Fiedler. The second of nine children, he was born at the rural Knopp School in Gillespie County Texas where his father was the school master for this one room country school. Growing up in and around Fredericksburg Texas was always the anchor that grounded him in life. He always commented that growing up in Fredericksburg everyone spoke German and that he did not speak a word of English when he started the first grade in school but was frustrated that they still taught him German throughout his school years, graduating from Fredericksburg High School in the Class of 1936. In 1940, Harold married Margaret "Mac" Faust of Comfort Texas, living in Austin for the first years of their marriage.

Harold served his country honorably during World War II rising to the rank of Sergeant at an airfield supply depot with the Eight Army Air Corp outside London. He always lamented that he was in "Buzz Bomb Alley" and received the Purple Heart after being knocked to the ground and dazed with the explosion of one that left a twenty foot deep hole just feet from where he was standing. After the War he returned to his job as a salesman for a tobacco company and was sent to the Philippines where he and Mac enjoyed several years as "Ex-Pats" living the good life before returning to the states and starting a family with the birth of their son Charles. With this life changing event Harold realized that working as a traveling salesman and raising a family was not the best situation and accepted an offer to partner with his brother-in-Law, Bill Held in Houston Spraying & Supply Company, ("SPRAYCO") spending the next 33 years working and living in Houston. Life in Houston was good. Harold and Mac were very active in their community and especially with their church, but Mac contracted breast cancer and left him in 1977 having battled this insidious disease for several years. After 37 years of marriage, this left a significant hole in Harold's life.

With the help of friends, family and work he persevered. A vibrant soul named Mary came into his life and forced him to remain engaged in life. He finally retired from SPRAYCO at the age 70. This presented him with the opportunity to play golf and travel, which he did extensively with his younger brother Walter. Another joy in his life was the birth of his grandson, Thomas William.

While Harold retired from work, he never retired from volunteering. He was a fixture at Mana the neighborhood thrift shop in Houston. He also continued to play golf at Memorial Park with an enjoyable group of fellows until the group began to shrink as aliments and changes in life situations removed them, one-by-one leaving him as the last one around. At ninety-two he decided he needed to make a change, moving to the Land of Enchantment, to join Charles and Jane, enjoying the rest of his life in the high desert of northern New Mexico.

Harold is survived by his son Charles and wife Jane of Rio Rancho, NM, his grandson Thomas, wife Courtney, and great-grandchildren Nora and Jetson of Visalia, CA. He is also survived by one sibling, Ethelyn Held of Houston, TX.

Following a service in New Mexico Harold will return to Texas and be buried alongside his wife Margaret with a graveside service on October 18, 2021 in the Comfort Cemetery at 11:00a.m.
