Carl Edward Valentine, 85, formerly of Blakesburg, passed away December 14, 2018 at Timber Ridge Assisted Living in Ottumwa. As of two days prior, Carl celebrated 64 years of marriage to his wife, the former Betty Fenton. Somewhere in a forested area of Heaven, no doubt the other angels will find Carl, walking stick in hand, hunting for his beloved morel mushrooms. Carl was always one for outdoor adventures and he tended his abundant gardens each year with loving care. Carl was employed at Lowenburg Bakery for 13 years. After that, he served as Union President for the Communication Workers of America Local 7115. He was proud of his role as an advocate for the people who worked there. He retired in 1995 from Northwestern Bell after 29 years of service. While Carl was born in Monroe County, he spent most of his years living with his wife, Betty while raising their six children on Ridge Road in Blakesburg. He leaves behind his wife, Betty; six children, David (Roxann) Valentine of Newton, Danny (Nan) Valentine of Clive, IA, Linda Valentine of Las Cruces, NM, Philip Dean (Beth) Valentine of Wylie, TX, Lisa (Joe) Blazina of Ottumwa and Tom (Sarah) Valentine of Ottumwa; 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Stan and Phil Valentine and an infant sister. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home. Always thinking of others, after the service Carl has donated his body for scientific research to Des Moines University. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
