Helen (Jaspers) Abbott, 89, nurse, mother

Helen Dorothy (Jaspers) Abbott died Sept. 1, 2003.

Mrs. Abbott was born on Nov. 30, 1913, the third and last child of Peter F. Jaspers and Alma Evarena (Gunderson) Jaspers, who built their first home on Puget Island in 1905.

Mrs. Abbott was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church on Puget Island. She was part of the first confirmation class from that congregation. Her report cards were written in Norwegian.

After graduating from Wahkiakum High School in 1932, her parents felt it was important that she receive a good education. Despite the depression of the time, they worked hard to see that she was able to attend St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Astoria. She graduated with a nursing degree in 1937.

While attending nursing school she met her future husband, Harry B. Abbott, who was originally from Lisbon, N.D. They were married Oct. 11, 1937, in Castle Rock, Wash.

The couple lived in Longview, where Harry worked for Longbell Lumber Co. and Helen worked at Cowlitz General Hospital. Then after a short stay on Puget Island and another in Vancouver, the Abbotts and their growing family moved to Yoncalla, Ore. There, Harry was given a distributorship for Perkins Oil Co. It was in Yoncalla where they purchased the family home and raised their five children.

Mrs. Abbott was an active participant in her new community. While her children were young, she worked out of her home as a nurse. She gave shots, bandaged wounds, helped deliver babies, helped organize well-baby clinics, and comforted the dying.

Later, she clerked in the local grocery stores and butcher shop. She was the official nurse for the annual Yoncalla Professional Rodeo for many years. She was a participant in the Business and Professional Women's organization and the Yoncalla PTA. Also one of the fire phones for the Yoncalla Fire Department was in her home and she often rang the siren to call for volunteers in an emergency.

She loved to read books, write poetry, work crossword puzzles, tell jokes, do hand work, and play cards. For many years she raised a large garden and canned large quantities of food for her family. She also participated in local plays and skits and gave readings to entertain others. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends.

Although her first priority was her family, her many acquaintances and friends knew they could always find a sympathetic ear, something to eat and a cup of coffee if they visited her home.

Mrs. Abbott returned to full-time nursing in 1962 when she began working for the Douglas Community Hospital in Roseburg, Ore., where she was employed until 1977. She truly enjoyed her profession and was never late for work. She then worked for Orthopedic Surgeons, Drs. Young and Donnahue, until she retired.

Survivors include: Her five children and their spouses, Lauretta (Mrs. Ed Stuart) of Cathlamet, Wash., Margaret (Mrs. Don Jackson) of Hillsboro, Ore., Carol (Mrs. David Nehring) of Auberry, Calif., Mary (Mrs. James Lancaster) of Yoncalla, Ore., and Tim and Darla (Haines) Abbott, of Silver Springs, Nev.; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, brothers Floyd and Louis Jaspers, and one great grandson preceded her in death.

The family requests memorials be made to Washington County Hospice, Yoncolla Community Center, or the charity of one's choice.

Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. in the Yoncalla Cemetery, Yoncalla, Ore.
