Julius was a son of William Moldenhauer and Albertina Kurth/Korth. He emigrated from Germany to Canada in 1884.

On August 5, 1899, Julius, a 26-year-old farmer, married Lydia Michaelis, age 26, in South Algona Township (now part of Bonnechere Valley Township), Renfrew County. The couple lived near the village of Golden Lake in Algona Wilberforce Township, Renfrew County.

Julius and Lydia had four known children:
- Esmerelda "Essie" Lila Ruth (1900-1954)
- Arthur Ezra (1902-1981)
- Irene Ruby Vera "Ruby" (b. 1905)
- Edna (b. 1913)

Sometime between 1915 and 1921, the Moldenhauer family moved to Pilkington Township, Wellington County.
