Margaret Francis Burgoyne Hughes "Margo", 99, retired registered nurse, died Monday, October 11, 2021, at her home.

She was born August 9th, 1922, in Beggs, Oklahoma to Ezra Grover and Lula Freeman Burgoyne. She graduated from Prairie View High School near Seminole, Oklahoma in 1940. Her family moved to Winfield. She attended Ark City Junior College (as it was known then) and also worked at Cessna Aircraft at Wichita (another Rosie the riveter) before entering the 1944 Cadet Nurse Corp program at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

She graduated in 1947 and was employed by Dr. Bernstorf as an office surgical nurse and later also office nurse for Dr. Max Wells. She worked at William Newton Hospital and did private duty nursing. She was in nursing for 40 years, the office nurse at Snyder Clinic retiring in 1986 after 30 years.

She married John R. "Bob" Hughes, Jr. June 8th, 1950. He died October 2002. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and the couple traveled to attend state and national meetings along with three national conventions at Pearl Harbor on December 7th.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, William Newton Hospital Alumnus, American Legion Auxiliary, retired member of the American Nurse Association, and Kansas State Nurses association. She also delivered Meals on Wheels.

She was very much a KU and Wichita State sports fan. She was interested in all sports as long as she could watch them on TV or listen to them on the radio. She liked crossword puzzles but needed the A-Z dictionary. Her biggest love was watching her family, particularly her grandchildren grow from babies until today. She felt so blessed God was so good to her. Through the years she was very happy and content taking care of and helping other people. It was a joy for her.

Survivors include son John; 2 grandsons; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 nieces; 2nephew Max Burgoyne, Jr. and wife, Rita of Lexington, SC; 2 nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband John, her parents Ezra Grover and Lula Burgoyne, brother Max Burgoyne and wife, Phyllis, brother Grover Burgoyne and wife, Thelma, brother-in-law Fred Hughes, sisters-in-law Patti Hughes Houser, Janet Austin and her precious seven year old great granddaughter Maddie.

Funeral services will be held at Miles Funeral Service on Monday, October 18, 2021, at 10:30 A.M. Private interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Margo's name for the Winfield Food Pantry and for Friendship Meals. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
