Letha Olive Baum Kirk

FAIRVIEW — The funeral for Letha Olive Baum Kirk, 87, will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Cedar Springs Church of the Nazarene, west of Fairview. The Rev. Herb Berkely will officiate. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and before the service on Monday at the church.

Letha Olive Baum Kirk was born March 19, 1920, and passed on to her heavenly reward on Nov. 14, 2007, at the age of 87 years. Her parents, John and Olive Baum, and their parents were early settlers in the Oklahoma Cherokee Strip near Fairview, and Letha was born on the family farm six miles west of Fairview. Letha attended Pleasant Hill Elementary School and graduated from Fairview High School in 1938. On Sept. 10, 1940, she married Elmer Lee Kirk, and they settled on a farm near Canton.

When World War II erupted, Letha and Elmer contributed to the war effort through their work on the farm, until Elmer was drafted in 1944. While Elmer was overseas in the Army, Letha raised their daughter Barbara and worked in California in a toy factory. When Elmer returned, they continued farming and welcomed their son, Delvin into their family. During the 1950s, while Elmer trucked fruits and vegetables from Colorado, Letha kept the farm going and raised the children. Their third child, Danna was born to them during these years. Letha and Elmer continued farming and raising cattle for the rest of their 52 years together.

Letha, a lifelong member of Cedar Springs Nazarene Church, continually contributed to the Lord's work with her labor and her talents. She taught Sunday school and Bible school throughout her life and led the Missionary Society for 20 years. Although she was a leader of the church, her life spoke volumes about the virtues of humility and charity.

As a wife, she was always supportive and attentive to her husband's needs. As a mother, she taught her children from an early age about faith by example and led each one to Christ. Letha was the kind of grandmother that each of her grandchildren loved to visit. She always had cookies in the oven and ice cream in the freezer.

Her husband, Elmer, her parents and three of her five siblings predeceased her.

She left behind to celebrate her life her sister, Doreen Whitney of Scott Valley, Calif.; her children, Barbara and Don Turner of Longdale, Delvin and Saundra Kirk of Ponca City and Danna and Terry Mayhall of Athens, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

King Solomon could have easily been speaking of Letha when he penned the words of Proverbs 31. "Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many daughters have done well. But you excel them all.' Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing. But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands. And let her own works praise her in the gates."

Memorial donations may be made to Cedar Springs Church of the Nazarene; OMRF: Parkinson's or Heart Research with Fairview Funeral Home, Inc. serving as custodian of the funds.
