She was born in Yancey County Sept. 3, 1947, the daughter of the late Charlie and Clora Silvers Rathbone. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Jerry N. Cole; sisters, Libby Lochaby and Carolyn Rathbone.
Shirley was a member of Sandy Ridge Baptist. She worked at Century Furniture for 30 years, then went on to work for Catawba County school systems in the cafeteria for 15 years.
She volunteered for the Hickory Soup Kitchen, Hunger Walks, and Race for a Cure, always wanting to help and give to those in need.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and kind caring friend; she was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her daughter, Monica Setzer (Jeff) of Catawba; twin grandsons, Cole Setzer and Clay Setzer both of Catawba; grandfur baby, Peebles; longtime boyfriend, Terry Hendrix of China Grove; sisters Charlene Bolick of Popular, and Sue Bailey of Florida,; brother, Richard Rathbone (Gladys) of Spruce Pine; and special niece, Deborah Shew.
The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 13, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., at Hickory Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m., at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris Rathbone officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
