Services for William F. "Billy" Smith were held Monday afternoon from the Nain Lutheran church in Newell; Rev. Charles Terrell officiating.
Smith, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith of Sulphur Springs, died last Friday morning from injuries sustained in a tragic truck accident near Gainesville, Tex., on Thanksgiving day.
Smith and "Pat" Kuhn of Newell were returning home after delivering a load of livestock to Dallas, Tex. As they went over the crest of a hill, another truck had pulled onto the highway in front of them and the machine in which the two local young men were riding, crashed into the rear of the other truck.
The two were treated at a nearby Gainesville hospital and Smith was then transferred to a Dallas hospital where attempts to save his life failed.
Kuhn is recovering from multiple facial lacerations, a cracked vertebra and a broken arm. Mrs. Kuhn is in Dallas now with her husband.
Billy Smith had been married but some four months and was residing in Storm Lake. He was employed by Peters Bros., of Storm Lake.
William F. Smith was born May 18, 1937. He was graduated from Providence high school with the class of 1955.
Music at the services was provided by Eligah Chiles, accompanied by Genevieve Johansen. In charge of flowers were Mrs. Jens Bak, Mrs. William Kischer and Mrs. Clifford Baak.
Attendants were Richard Renshaw, Charles Weatherall, William Geary, Kenneth Marten, Robert Sunberg and Robert Myers. Burial was in the Newell cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Janice, his parents, a sister, Carol (Mrs. Bill Peterson of Keokuk), grandmother Lillie Smith of Marathon, grandfather, Chris Mortenson, Storm Lake.
The entire Newell and Sulphur Springs communities are saddened by the untimely passing of this young man and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife, parents and relatives.
