JOHN J. "Jack" STAKEM, 39, former LaSalle High School basketball star, died suddenly yesterday at his home in Bethesda. He had been ill for several months. A son of Mrs. Alice McPartland Stakem and the late Thomas C. Stakem, he became widely known in the Cumberland area while playing on LaSalle teams from 1925 to 1928. He was the Western Maryland Interscholastic League high scorer in 1928.

Married and the father of four children, he moved away from Cumberland in 1932 when he was employed by the State of Maryland in Baltimore. In recent years he had been associated with the National Cash Register Company. Six months agoe he was made manager of the accounting division of the cash register company in its Washington, DC territory. At that time he moved from Baltimore to Bethesda.

His widow is the former Eleanor Smith of Baltimore. His children, all of who reside at the Bethesda home, are John J. Stakem Jr.; James Stakem, Maureen Stakem and Nancy Stakem. Stakem's mother resides at 219 Schley Street, this city. He is also survived by four brothers, Thomas C. Stakem, James E. Stakem, Robert P. Stakem and Joseph F. Stakem; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas B. Cumiskey and Alice M. Stakem, both of Cumberland.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bethesda. Interment will be in Baltimore.
