Carole May Wilhelm, 78, of Hancock, Md., passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at the Meritus Medical Center, in Hagerstown, Md.

Born on September 14, 1943, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Richard Lapole and Clara (Lum) Lapole; the widow of her first husband, David Michael McCardell; and the wife of Freeman Wilhelm.

She was a 1961 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, in Hagerstown, Md.

She was a member of Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, in Hancock.

Her hobbies included crafting, crocheting, gardening, doll collecting, and puzzles. She loved spending time with her family and friends, and her best friend was her dog, Mimi.

In addition to her husband, Freeman, she is survived by a son, David M. McCardell, II and his wife, Susan, of Ellicott City, Md.; daughters, Lisa Deuel, of Keyser, W.Va., and Stacy Wilhelm, of Berkely Springs, W.Va.; a brother, Ricky Lapole, of Inwood, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Keegan McCardell, Raven May Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, Tabatha Deuel, and Preston Wilhelm; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Dakota, and Breonna May.

In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce Stevens and Peggy Lapole; two brothers, Raymond Lapole and Richard Lapole; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis May Harbaugh.

The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, on Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with funeral services at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Jeffrey Hawbaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, in Hagerstown, Md.
